Cost of Living in Ukraine
To live comfortably in Ukraine, a student needs an average of US$1200 to US$1800 annually. These figures may vary depending on a student’s lifestyle. In addition to the tuition fee and accommodation, living costs is a lot cheaper in Ukraine than other European cities. We try our possible best to present an average cost of different products below.
National currency is Hryvnia (UAH). 1 USD = 25 Hryvnia (08/09/2019)
You can change foreign currency in banks, kiosks,also in local and international airports. Rates are relatively same everywhere although with a slight difference in banks. Payment for purchasing and services is done in hryvnias
Ukraine has different network service providers. Kyivstar, MTC, Lifecell are the most popular mobile connections. SimCards and credits are very affordable. Most of the universities provide access to the Free Internet for their students. There are also a lot of Internet- cafes.
You can use services of fast mail, represented by DHL, FedEx, ARAMEX, TNT, UPS and other companies.
International students live in university hostels. There are various types of hostels. It is also possible to live in Ukrainian families or to rent a flat.
Credit cards can be used for international payment systems. They can be used in many of the shops, hotels, transport companies, clubs, and restaurants. In cities, the network of exchange machines is well developed including, the most popular among students are PrivatBank, Ukrsib Bank, and AVAL bank. These banks are often used to open accounts for international students.
In these Banks, you can save money both in foreign currency and Ukrainian hryvnia. Branches of these banks are situated in all regions of the country. It makes it easier to transfer money through Western Union, Money Gram, and many other local money transfer systems.
Ukraine is a an agricultural country with different delicacies and kitchen traditions. Varieties of food can be purchased in shops, supermarkets, local markets etc. Cafeterias, restaurants, and fast food restaurants offer different cuisine. European, Indian, Pakistani, Asian, Georgian, and African dishes are available. The Food in Ukraine is cheap; For 5US$ a student can buy 5 kg of Potatoes or 4 kg of Onions or 3 liters of milk or 3 dozens of eggs. 1 kg of beef or chicken may cost US$3 to US$5. Dairy products are cheap as well. For 1US$, you can buy at least 2 big loaves of bread.
Most of the Universities provide free medical service in students’ hospitals. Obtaining a medical and fire insurance is a prerequisite for completing your registration and enrollment in any Ukrainian University. Students can also go to state and private hospitals, where medical service is to be paid. Ambulance Services is free
Electricity Bill is included in the hostel fees so students living in hostels need not worry. . Electricity bills are cheap in Ukraine. If you are living in a flat, you can pay as low as 30$ per month. The standard electrical currency throughout Ukraine is 220 volts. Some outlets operate on 127 volts, but these are very rare. You may need a converter as well as an Eastern European plug adapter if you are bringing electrical appliances
The international airport also known as Borispol International, is the air gate of the country, 36 km from Kiev. To get to Kiev from the airport you can take a taxi, shuttle-bus or bus. You can also order pick up service in the university.
Other than the Borispol airport, you can take international flights from Odessa, Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Kharkiv, and Lviv. International railway connections are with Germany,Bulgaria, Czech, Slovakia and Poland. International bus routes are from Poland, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany by ship you can get from Turkey.
Internally,Ukraine has a well-developed transportation system. So there will be no problems getting to any part of the country. You can travel all over the country by train or bus. The fare for distance 500 km is about US$12-15. You can buy train tickets in advance either at the railway station or in the city. On the day of departure, a ticket can be bought at the station only.
The students may buy a travel pass to use at public transport (Subway Trains, Electric Buses). Such travel tickets do not cost more than 20US$ for a month.
